You want to talk on your video, so is it better to script it, or to be interviewed? I have a definite preference, but both types have their place.

If you’re not familiar with speaking on camera, definitely go with an interview. That way, you can talk to a human, rather than a cold, hard machine. Interviews also tend to feel more authentic and allow you to really express emotion, which will help you connect with your audience.

The downside is that interviews will need to be edited to cut out the fat, and you will always think of other things that you wanted to say. Even with this, as a professional, I definitely prefer interviews because capturing the emotion of my client, to me, is the most important.

But that being said… this very video is scripted.

Scripted videos work well for someone who is familiar with speaking on camera, or someone who knows public speaking or makes regular sales pitches. It also allows you to communicate your message in a super-short video because you can map out the words ahead of time. Scripts are also essential if there is complex information that you need to share in a precise manner.

BUT if you don’t have a teleprompter, or can’t memorize the script, don’t try it. Holding up cue cards next to the camera turns your eyes away from the audience and makes you appear untrustworthy or unconfident.

So, for most uses, I recommend an interview. But scripts definitely have their place.
