Editing a short promotional video is a lot like creating a song. You have to create a rhythm and follow patterns for the best viewing experience.

Use different types of shots. So there are some that are taken from far away, some that are mid-range and others that are close to the subject matter and show detail. Editing typically follows a pattern of far to near. So introduce a subject from far away then bring in mid- and closer shots to show off the feature you want to highlight.

Also try to create a literal rhythm, especially if you’re editing to music. Cut on the beat so that the shots have a nice flow. Sometimes you can get fancy and have an action occur on the beat, like something falling that lands when your music has a downbeat.

And always put your best content up front. You have about 8 seconds to capture someone’s attention. Then, end with your second-best content to entice them to engage with your mission.
