Hi, I'm Daniel with etrailer, and today, we're going to take a look at, and I'm going to show you to install the etrailer universal installation kit for brake controllers, other known as ETBC7 kit on a 2024 Subaru Outback Wagon. We are going to be installing this with our Triflex Next Curt brake controller, but this is going to work with any brake controller you decide to use with your Subaru. This kit's going to come with your seven-way on the back, allowing you to plug into your trailer that has brakes, and it's going to give you all the wiring and breakers you need to get this installed. It's going to provide a brake signal from your brake controller all the way back to your trailer. You will also need your trailer wiring installed, and that's just going to be your four-pole that comes down, and that'll plug directly into the ETBC7. And the nice thing about this kit is it still gives you that option.
So if you're not towing your trailer that has that seven-way, then you can plug in on the side here with your four-pole. This is the brake controller we're using this kit with, and this is going to work with a variety of different brake controllers. One I really like is the Red Arc. That one's a little more discreet. It's just one button, and they already have knockouts on the left side here that you can put it in.
If you're looking to get this installed but don't have the time or tools, we do have an installer locator you can check out. It's installer local to you to get whatever you need installed. If you want to do it yourself, follow along, and in this video, we'll walk you through the process. Starting off, I got our four-pole wiring installed. There's actually just a plug right under our cargo tray that you can plug in, and I got the zip tied up, and I ran our four-pole wires out to the outside.
Now, something I will mention is this kit has a red wire included, and that's going to be our brake signal. You can either tap into this and run this up front along with your other wires, or you can tap into the brake light switch by your brake pedal. So a lot of times, that can be very difficult to get to, and sometimes, it doesn't work properly, so you will have to test it. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to tap into this wire and run that out. Get that cut.
And if you do do it this way, you will have to source some extra wire. And we just had some white wire laying around the shop, so this is what I'm going to use. And I ran this white wire out. There's actually a grommet right here where I ran all of our wires out. Now we need to get our seven-way plug installed. So to do this, I got a long bracket. This doesn't come in the kit, but these are nice because they can clamp around the hitch and then we'll mount it like this. So first, I'll get this attached. I forgot our long bracket attached. I attached the seven-way plug to our bracket. I just used the nuts and bolts that came in the kit. I used a 3/8 wrench on the back, just the Phillips to tighten those down. And then on the top, I just attached this to our long bracket, again with those hardware that came in the long bracket kit, and I used a 5/16 socket to tighten that nut down. I have our four-pole ran over to our plug, and get this plugged in to the connector on the back. And then the four-pole that's closer to the plug, that just gets mounted on the side, just like this. To ensure these stay together, I'm going to use a zip tie, put them in the middle. I'll get that cut, as well as the dust cap, because I'm not going to be using that. Now for that, I'll wrap this all in electrical tape, so to decrease the likelihood that water can get in here and corrode the pins. This white wire is our ground. It already has an eyelet on it, so we can use a self-tapper and tap this into some metal. And if you don't have a good area, you can't extend this, just cut this off and extend it with some wire. But I'm going to use a self-tapper and go right into the metal right above this. I already started a hole. (drill whirring) Now from our seven-way, we have a blue and a black wire, and I'm going to cut these butt connectors off. I'm going to use some heat shrink butt connectors because this is going to be outside. I've
