I think of facial oils as a substitute fat layer for the skin, which tends to diminish as we get older. Oils are literally fats, and I find they help keep skin supple and comfortable as that natural cushioning layer thins over time.
I also love facial oils because I don't feel dry by mid-day, which happens with many creams. Just like there are long-wear lipsticks, I think of facial oils as a "long-wear" moisturizer. Skin stays moist + dewy for hours.
I can't count the number of people I've converted to loving facial oils with this simple, budget-friendly step: hydrator. My rules of thumb:
1️⃣ Use a watery hydrator first. Rose water, a hydrating toner, or even damp skin from the shower all work.
2️⃣ Don't be afraid to use a lot. I find 3 rounds is the magic number. Dry skin looks plumper and more supple. Oily skin often becomes a lot less oily throughout the day.
3️⃣ Massage your hydrator in. If your skin isn't still damp after the third round, leave the last layer sitting on the skin before applying oil.
4️⃣ If you're acne-prone, use lots of hydrator and very little oil. Usually 1–4 drops max is enough.
5️⃣ Hydrator + oil is the foundation of my skincare routine and every gua sha routine I teach.
Fave oils:
✨ Oils I like if you’re oily/acne-prone: Black Seed Oil, Squalane, @apoterra Sea Berry Oil, Tamanu
✨ If you’re dry/mature: @myHavtorn Face Oil, Squalane, or any facial oil with 1 drop of castor oil
