I love releasing the jaw with acupuncture! It’s especially satisfying for both patient and practitioner when those hard working muscles give up and release with a little jump.
Because the jaw doesn’t work alone I always needle tight, restricted areas of the neck, upper chest (with transverse needling only of course!), and upper trapezius. Distally, the elbow areas of the arm — LU 5, LI 10, SJ “9.5” — also help the neck and jaw let go. I palpate for what’s most tender and restricted.
Cosmetically, releasing the jaw is key to getting that natural facial lift, so I work extra hard here to release the tension that hijacks the face downward after years of jaw tension and grinding.
Would you do this? Or does it look too scary? Trust me, it feels amaaaaazzzing!
