Welcome back to Sunday Morning and The Old Cookbook Show! Today we dive into another nostalgic treasure from Prince Edward Island Home Recipes, a WWII-era Canadian wartime cookbook filled with both practical and surprisingly aspirational baking recipes. This week’s feature: a classic Beachberg Pudding—also known in some circles as a “sauce and cake” dessert.

This vintage pudding cake recipe uses pantry staples like flour, brown sugar, corn syrup, raisins, and milk, topped with a rich, bubbling brown sugar sauce that forms during baking. It’s a self-saucing cake with roots in old-fashioned frugality—but with flavour that’s anything but plain. No eggs, no spices, and yet... it tastes just like a warm, cozy spice cake. This dessert was popular during the war and made a major comeback in the 1970s across Canada, Australia, and New Zealand—sometimes even in boxed cake mix form!

Join us as we explore the history of PEI wartime cooking, old-fashioned dessert techniques, and the nostalgic magic of saucy baked puddings. And yes—there’s even a side story about a still-operating woolen mill from the book’s advertisements!
