How big is the current Subnautica 2 map compared to Subnautica 1 and Subnautica: Below Zero? In this video, I take a closer look at the current Early Access map size, compare it to the previous games, and show some speculative future map expansion areas based on the current story direction.

Right now, in the first phase of Subnautica 2 Early Access, the current playable map appears to be approximately 2,431 meters across. This is an estimate based on drawing a line between the two furthest points I could measure without swimming or traveling outside the safe playable boundaries of the map.

For comparison, the original Subnautica 1 map was roughly 4,300 meters across, while Subnautica: Below Zero was approximately 2,458 meters across. That means the current Subnautica 2 Early Access map is already almost the same surface-distance size as Below Zero, even though this is only the first playable chunk of the game.

That is the big takeaway. Subnautica 2 is still in Early Access, but its current map is already close to Below Zero’s full map width. The current estimate is about 2,431 meters for Subnautica 2 versus about 2,458 meters for Below Zero. That is extremely close, especially when you remember that Subnautica 2 is not finished yet and is expected to expand with future updates.

However, map width alone does not tell the full story. Subnautica maps are not just flat circles of ocean. Both Subnautica 1 and Below Zero had extensive underground areas, cave systems, interior zones, land areas, islands, ice regions, and layered vertical spaces. So while the surface-distance comparison is useful, it does not fully account for explorable volume, vertical depth, underground biomes, or above-water terrain.

Subnautica 1 had a larger overall map at around 4,300 meters across, but it also had massive biome variety, deep zones, caves, alien facilities, the Lost River, Lava Zones, and islands. Below Zero was smaller across the surface, but it made up for some of that with tighter biome density, underground caves, ice tunnels, Arctic land areas, and above-water exploration.

Subnautica 2 is still early, but it already has a large playable area, multiple major regions, deep holes, hot caves, alien ruins, hidden routes, and hints toward future expansion. In this video, I also draw some speculative guess lines and possible future zone areas on the map. These are not confirmed final boundaries, but they help show where the map could expand later.

One of the biggest reasons to expect future map growth is the current story direction. At the end of the current Early Access content, the game points toward eventually traveling across the world to reach the massive titan-sized World Tree. Based on that story setup, it seems likely that future updates will open more regions, new biomes, new routes, and possibly large stretches of map that are not currently playable.

So while Subnautica 2 is not bigger than the original Subnautica yet, it is already surprisingly close to Below Zero in surface map size during its first Early Access phase. Once future zones, underground regions, deep biomes, alien structures, and possible World Tree routes are added, the final map could become much larger than what we can currently explore.

In this video:
• Subnautica 2 Early Access map size estimate
• Current playable map is about 2,431 meters across
• Subnautica 1 map comparison at around 4,300 meters
• Subnautica: Below Zero comparison at around 2,458 meters
• Why Subnautica 2 is already close to Below Zero’s map size
• Why surface distance does not show total explorable space
• Underground zones, caves, islands, and vertical map design
• Speculative future Subnautica 2 map expansion areas
• Possible future route toward the titan-sized World Tree
• How big the final Subnautica 2 map could become
