I had just had a “go” around the block on what seemed like the first truly nice day of summer in southern California and I was feeling a little melancholy. Not in a bad way, just introspective and chill to a point of calm. Call it melan-calm-ie. I walked inside and sat down to my computer and put on Hot Toddy’s “Love Music”. “Isssss love music…woooah baby”. Excellent; groove is in the heart now. Similar to a Hot Toddy (the drink) when you’re starting to feel a tickle in the throat, my mood warmed up and I felt the music’s sweet and tangy potion. No more melan-calm-ie.
Hot Toddy a.k.a Chris Todd is no stranger to producing this sort of sound. One half of “Crazy P(enis)”, consisting of Chris Todd and Ron Baron, a name that comes from a late 80s house record that the duo adored when they met at the University of Nottingham in ’95. Chris has been producing under the moniker “Hot Toddy” since 1997’s “Three Sheets to the Wind”. He’s produced for such labels as Neon Heights, Paper Recordings, Om Record’s sub label Smoke N’ Mirrors and Winding Road. His chops are thick and his global presence is juicy.
I was already in love with this track and then at the 2:45 mark it drops the guitar elements and leaves the bass and drum, sprinkling it with tech elements that make me wanna get down and dirty on a dark dance floor. The song just makes me smile inside. Inside a pool, inside a small club inside my mind, inside my heart.
Music can set you free and Hot Toddy warms the soul, disco and house in my body. Keep ‘em coming Hot Toddy, I’m slurping it up.
