"Wasteland" by Tierra Whack

Tierra Whack is a mischievous player in the game, eschewing conformity and obscuring continuity as she expands her stellar catalogue. “Wasteland” is the fourth of five singles Whack released in February and March; they follow Whack World, her audiovisual experimental record that’s fifteen minutes, fifteen tracks, and one hell of a fun time. Here, she guides us into her frame of reference with a soft organ loop that melds with producer Nick Verruto’s take on hard 90s R&B and soul.
Tierra has a knack for crafting indestructible hooks that hang around in your head hours after the initial listen, and “Wasteland” is no exception. She handles lyrics like baking ingredients: each syllable is measured exactly, and she’s skilled at mixing them. “I was brought up by myself / And it’s by choice,” Whack raps as she laments a lover’s lingering feelings. Why can’t we stay connected? “We can’t FaceTime / You got Android.” It’s beside the point that there are other video chat formats - why are you opposing me?
In an interview with Billboard, Whack referred to her younger self as a class clown with a penchant for imitating voices. Catch her putting competition to shame with her dexterity, using her timbre to drag your emotion on the path her vision commands. One minute she’s harmonizing in her falsetto, next she’s dropped to imitate and man and twist her syllables into taffy, stretching and smashing them like smacking lips. God, it’s delicious. You feel the annoyance and the separation in every sigh, every exasperation and background vocal. At Coachella on Friday, soak up the extemporaneous energy of one of rap’s most unique up-comers.
