It’s been many, many moons, and his catalogue of work-in-progress has sprung numerous leaks, and he’s retreated in several dips and dodges out of the spotlight but Jai Paul has finally returned and he’s brought along tunes as ambient and edgy as any he’s put out. “Do You Love Her Now” is the first proper single he’s released in nearly eight years and he returns to a sonic place that he occupied before: one where the listener can never figure out where he’s going next.
A Jai Paul composition is noted as such for being incredibly complex while also being almost nothing at all. His vocals are unintelligible and the arrangements are so conflated that they can border on transcendent. “Do You Love Her Now” pushes transcendental to an ethereal place as his falsettos cascade into the production like waterfalls from peaks so high you can’t make them out.
The absolute icing on the cake is the heavy electric guitar that strums in monotone underneath the entire track that grounds all the sounds he splatters on this vibrant sonic canvas. It fades in like sunlight through the blinds and the effect is further compounded by the delicate sounds of nature in the background: birds chirping, brooks bubbling. They have absolutely no place in a recording studio with Jai Paul but he welcomes them in and gives them a home, and this track brims with warmth because of those small finishing touches. Welcome to a new era from a modern studio master.
