"Find Another Way (Tor)" by Tor & MA/AM

10 years ago, Tor remixed Illinoise by Sufjan Stevens and mashed it up with verses spit by some of the finest artists in hip-hop, including Outkast and Big Daddy Kane. He’s still remixing the best, but now they’re album official, gracing the B-sides of artists like ODESZA, CloZee, and Vancouver-duo MA/AM, who we’re featuring today. Made up of Mateo (producer) and Adam Biggs (vocals), MA/AM create dreamy soundscapes reminiscent of Rüfüs du Soul (yep, Tor remixed them too), leaving plenty of room for Tor to “Find Another Way” to make his mark on this track.
After Illinoize, Tor released Drum Therapy, his first album which caught the attention of Emancipator, who then signed Tor to his label, Loci Records. Their partnership has been fruitful, yielding, you guessed it - more remixes, along with a sold-out tour that hit venues like Red Rocks along the way. With atmospheric swells and dusty samples, it’s likely that Tor graced the playlists of many a Burning Man camp after his stellar performance at the Coachella Do LaB stage in 2018.
“Find Another Way” opens with a reverberating synth and vocal sample that transition into a simple drum kit, then evolving into a tribal collection characteristic of his sound. The woodblock ricochets like a woodpecker drilling into a fresh oak and the slapstick stings like hot grease jumping off of bacon in a pan, adding texture as the percussion take on a life of its own. Synths swell and instruments ebb and flow, accompanied by an eastern battle cry until Tor decides to fade each element out, leaving only the woodblock as the song comes to a close. A meditative cut, this song is versatile but takes some time, building as you progress through an activity. Whether that’s work or play, the office or the yoga studio, we encourage you to trust the process as you throw this one on.
