To most, Kishi Bashi is known as a multi-instrumentalist musician and songwriter who not only has a successful solo career, but who also is part of the popular band Of Montreal. But to others, Kishi Bashi is so much more; he is an elusive magician of music, performance, and beyond. His creatively executed use of various instruments, from strings to synths, can be heard on this song as a perfect presentation.
“Hahaha Pt 2” is exemplary in illustrating the explosive, colorful expression of Kishi Bashi’s talents. There are so many instrumental layers to these four minutes, and yet they unfold like the perfect ballad that you listen to on an endless loop. Only a song as powerfully eruptive as this can get away with being titled as “Hahaha Pt 2”. The layers of sound do not soothe, yet they do not challenge - they merely accentuate this eternal carnivale.
Kishi Bashi’s sophomore album, Lighght, from which this is the penultimate track, reads like a magical realism novel with spiraling instrumentals looped on top of saccharine vocals. The songs depict a world unfurled. The narrator weaves rich stories of whimsy, optimism, and youth across psychedelic rock. The instrumentals evoke a sense of a time spent basking in the warmth of the sun as the waves lap against our soaking bodies. It’s a joyous tale of a life fully lived as the narrator assures us “we laughed at the ocean / charmed life have we.” We cannot control the role life presents us, yet through “Hahaha Pt. 2” Kishi Bashi reminds us that we control how we perceive these moments, and most importantly, how our perception dictates our reaction to these opportunities.
