Contrary to what my lovely wife thinks, I AM a risk taker.
Just because I don't want to ride in a helicopter a.k.a. flying death machine over the mountains of Kauai, doesn't mean I'm risk averse. I mean, not wanting to jump off a 30 foot high rock is NORMAL, amirite? Shit, I scuba dived once and had a full-on anxiety attack, makes total sense to not want to do it again. Sheesh.
Fine, perhaps I'm not Evil Knievel, but I do love long motorbike rides (yep, a glorified scooter) in foreign lands, dabble in psychedelia from time to time (meaning often), and I absolutely love artists who push their boundaries. Those things gotta nudge me up on the cool meter a bit.
In the world of risk-taking artists, there aren't many that move me right now. I can name them on one hand and might not even need all my fingers. Flume, check. Big Wild (even though I don't love his new sound), check. Sango, check. And, French beat crew La Fine Equipe, fuckenA CHECK. What constitutes a risk taking artist? One who gives you a different style nearly every song. Go listen to LFE's collab with Fakear "5th Season", then "Tourment d' amour", then "Cheese Naan", and then today's feature. All amazing productions and all vastly different.
I needed "Aurora" today. Like bad. This week has been tumultuous. Mainly inside my own head. Kinda uncomfortable at times. But hey that's life. This track from the jump with its angelic chants soothed my dome. Then what happens at the 54 second mark is simply glorious. Next, as my dear friend Ben Cohen put so eloquently, "that beat drop at 1:46 is fire". Yes, yes it is Ben. And Madjo, who are you? My heart is yours. Ok, I've said enough. Turn this mofo up and have the best weekend of your lives my compadres.
