"Pilgrims" by Widespread Panic

Curated by: Jared Paul

Genre: #southernrock

I've curated hundreds of songs for Rock With This and of all the music I've highlighted, this one might hold the most special place in my heart.

Growing up in Atlanta, GA, my formative years were dominated by the sound of one band, Widespread Panic. If you were between the ages of 13-35, then chances were that you were road-tripping a couple hundred miles to see the band.

While the Grateful Dead paved the way before them and as Phish was doing it on the East Coast, Panic was king in the South. They weren't just a band, they were a way movement. A way of life. An opportunity to hit the open road and party it up with your best buds. During my high school and college years I spent over 150 magical evenings basking in the light of the boys from Athens, GA.

Then everything changed in August of 2002 when founding member Mikey Houser (his nickname was 'Panic') died of pancreatic cancer. I remember the day he passed so vividly; it felt as if I had just lost a brother. The six-headed beast became five and the sound, at least for me, never was the same. Since his passing they've recruited jam-god guitarist Jimmy Herring, and while so many of the WSP faithful continue to travel near and far to see the boys, it's been about 5 years since I've seen them. That might all change in June as I'm considering making my return to Red Rocks to see my old friends.

As they celebrate 30 years as a band, I want to share one of my favorites of theirs. "Pilgrims" is off probably my favorite album ever, Everyday, and while I've heard this song no less than 300 times, it never gets old. An album that served as home for me during my angsty high school years, I believe it was what my ears heard after taking my first hit of marijuana. I strongly encourage you to listen to Everyday from top to bottom, uninterrupted, with headphones, sober or high, but preferably high. "Pilgrim"...that intro guitar riff (which I never could figure out), Sunny's chimes, Todd's driving rhythm, JB's angelic vocals, and to top it all off, Houser's soaring solo. Fucking good as gold.

We listen. We shake. Long live Widespread Motherfucking Panic.
