For those who enjoy blurring the boundary between meditative, ambient sound and jazztronica, Tor’s debut album, Blue Book, should not be missed. Familiar to other artists like Emancipator and Edamame, Tor’s unique blend of eastern sounds with hip hop and deep house beats create a soothing style of chill vibrations. These vibes are perfect for an afternoon spent in thought, an elongated drive at sunset, or a camping trip immersed in natural beauty. In part, this is due to Tor’s use of natural samples to create his song constructions. Combinations of rhythmic bells, chopped vocals, piano chords, and worldly percussion creates a rich soundscape that allows the listener to receive a sonic sacrament and exhale the day's tensions.
In CloZee’s original construction of "Secret Place", she creates an intricate blend of eastern harmonies that feature the melody of a pipe flute and harp. Breathy and of the earth, the song spends the first minute slowly building, layering each of these eastern elements until finally erupting into a trip-hop production best suited for an epic anime or a Nujabes tribute album.
Yet in Tor’s rework, he brings the same sense of affirmation. Atmospheric swells with analog synthesizers highlight keys aspects of the original framework, yet each diminishes before the song is able to transcend. The focus drives forward rather than skyward. Tor adds his own element, that of tin cans, tablas, and other intricate drums, as a means of creating textured space. His work is that of the intimate and intricate rather than the spirited.
