We saved Everest and Romeo from slaughter in January. Recently Everest's right eye started weeping clear tears. There was no swelling, so we gave it a day to see if it was just allergies or something simple. Of course, if you own a horse, you know nothing is ever simple or inexpensive. The eye was fine the next day, then weeping again. No goop, no swelling. Every time we'd go to call the vet, it would dry up again. After about a week of tears and dry, tears and dry, he started squinting, so I called the vet.
Sure enough, he had an ulcer. No idea what caused it and whatever it was, it was gone. We've been treating him with Bantamine, Atropine and Neomycin & Polymyxin Sulfates and bacitracin zinc ointment four times a day. This is the fifth day, and it appears to be clearing up. You can see how huge his pupil is from the Atropine drops.
Everyone says it, and I should've listened, if it involves the eyes, call a vet. Yes, I was out $250, but it's better than having a horse dodge slaughter, just to go blind in one eye. Everest's life has already been hard enough.
Thankfully, he'll be fine.
