A sculpture from 5mm neodymium magnetic balls, in the form of an hexagonal pyramid combined with a honeycomb structure. It was built entirely from a repeated triangular subunit of three interlocked rhombus shaped pieces. I used some extra units to fill out the bottom section, but this 9 layer version can be made from a minimum of 109 units:
(1+3+6+9+12+15+18+21+24) = 109 units x 42 = 4578 magnets in total.
It can be built bigger or smaller using the same repeating pattern.
