How to build my 'Honeycomb Pyramid' or 'Honeycomb Mountain' shape from neodymium magnetic balls. A simple repeating pattern from a single subunit that can be built as small or as large as you 'have the balls' to build with. It does look better big though.
It uses 3 rhombus shaped units of 14 balls to form a tri-rhombus subunit, so 42 balls per unit. It starts with 1 unit at the peak and then each additional layer needs a factor of 3 more units to build the shape, so in the 5 layer pyramid demonstrated in this video you need (1+3+6+9+12) = 31 units × 42 = 1302 balls.
The large 9 layer version seen in this video can be built with (1+3+6+9+12+15+18+21+24) = 109 units × 42 = 4578 balls.
Considerably more units are needed if you want to fill in the gaps in the created vertical honeycomb channels, which makes for a very hefty build.
