A Medina man faces charges after authorities said he seriously injured his left hand with a homemade bomb, leading investigators to discover several explosives and bomb-making materials at a home, according to the Orleans County Major Felony Crime Task Force.
First responders were called Aug. 6 to a home on Hellert Road in Shelby after receiving a report that a man had blown his hand off with a firework and was bleeding uncontrollably, authorities said. They found Daniel Ray, 30, with "extensive wounds" to his left hand and applied a tourniquet to stop the bleeding.
"Based on the explosion that happened there, we obtained a search warrant for the residence, and what we found were bomb-making materials," said Brett Sobieraski, an investigator with the Orleans County Major Felony Crime Task Force.
