Joan Bradford (Josephine Hutchinson) is a bored heiress who wants a taste of normal life, so on New Years Eve she meets window washer Bob Lane (Dick Powell) and a romance quickly blossoms, but Joan, fearing that she will lose him if he finds out that's she wealthy, rents a small apartment so that he will think that she is working-class, like him. Inevitably, Bob finds out and feels hurt and betrayed, despite his love for her. Will love conquer all? This film, while a musical romantic comedy, gave Powell a chance to do some dramatic acting as well in the emotional scene where he confronts Joan. Powell performs the title tune.

One of my favorite classic novels has been adapted several times (the first two silent film versions are sadly lost), and the most well-known is featured in this video. All three versions (1979, 1998, and 2008) are very good in their own way, and the three actresses who played the lead role each brought something special and unique. This is another re-do of an older video, with My Skin by Natalie Merchant as the background music. The tragic story of a young girl in the 19th century who was a victim of fate as well as the people and society around her (two men, in particular), is timeless and extremely moving. Enjoy!
