Girgarre Piggery is believed to be a breeder-only facility with roughly 3,200 sows, as of 2008.

The farm was previously investigated by activists in 2015, who found mother pigs confined to farrowing crates surrounded by dead and dying piglets, sow struggling to keep their footing on slippery floors and piglets who had their tails removed without pain relief.

Footage from the investigation was given to the Victorian Department of Environment and Primary Industries, who found there to be no breaches in animal welfare legislation. The awful conditions that had been uncovered were standard for the pig farming industry.

While the piggery has since switched their sow stalls to group house, in the decade since they were last exposed not much else has changed.

When investigators returned to Girgarre earlier this month, they found pigs in filthy overcrowded pens living in their own waste, mother pigs with pressure sores, as well as stillborn and sick piglets.
