Garden and outdoor railroads are quite different from indoor layouts. The construction is not the only difference; the design and design concepts are also quite different.

Most outdoor layouts are #1 gauge, 1 1/3 inch (45mm) gauge running trains in 1:32, 1:29, 1:24, 1:22.5, and 1:20.3 scales. Whatever the scale, the designs are usually the same, simpler than indoors, rarely designed for realistic operation, and above all, easy to maintain.

So before diving into actual layout designs, let's look at these differences and overall design concepts.
