Brain tanning deer hides into buckskin is one of those ancient skills shared among innumerable cultures throughout the world. Tanning, in general, is a great way to further utilize your game. In this primitive skills video I'll show you how to flesh a deer hide and turn it into soft buckskin but using egg yolks instead of deer brains! The water-soluble oils in the yolks act as a lubricant to keep the fibers from sticking together as the hide is worked dry. Once it's soft and dry, the deer skin is smoked for hours. The tar from the smoke is what actually preserves the hide and keeps it supple even after getting wet. Buckskin feels very different from bark tanned or commercially tanned leather. It's light and airy, making it a comfortable option for primitive clothing. With deer hunting season coming up, this is the perfect time to learn this primitive survival skill and get the most out of your deer.
