On Good Friday, March 29, 2013, I headed to the Centerville District of Fremont, California, to shoot some video of the Capitol Corridor and Altamont Commuter Express trains that pass through in the morning. I was also hoping to catch Amtrak Train 11, the southbound Coast Starlight, as it detoured through Fremont, Niles Canyon, Altamont Pass, Bakersfield and Tehachapi to Los Angeles. Union Pacific had closed the coast line during the week for track repairs.
I got my CC and ACE shots but missed the Coast Starlight figuring it was late as is often the case. At 10am I decided to head home through Newark with a faint hope of catching Train 11. I wasn't disappointed as I crossed the tracks at Thornton Avenue in Newark. To my right sat the Coast Starlight as it completed a crew change. I quickly pulled into a side street, walked back to the crossing and caught them leaving. As an added bonus, the private car Tioga Pass was on the rear with a couple of riders standing on the platform.
