This Voluntary is composed by Henry Coleman (1888-1965). His setting transforms a well-known congregational melody into a gentle expressive organ work.
Franconia is a noble and much-loved hymn tune from the Anglican tradition. Its warm, flowing melody has accompanied generations of worshippers and has been paired with several well-known hymn texts, including “Blest Are the Pure in Heart.” Elegant and dignified, Franconia remains a favourite in churches throughout the English-speaking world. In this recording, I present Henry Coleman’s charming organ voluntary based on this timeless tune.
The melody is from German origin: The melody is usually attributed to Johann Balthasar König (1691–1758) and first appeared in his collection Harmonischer Liederschatz (1738).
I performed this piece on the Royal Hospital School Grand OrganHauptwerk.
