Contemplation, Op. 51 | Rien Schalkwijk | 1803 van Peteghem Pipe Organ
It was quite a challenge to see whether my manual only composition Contemplation would work on a single manual pipe organ. The biggest challenge was that the left hand plays rich four note chords while the right hand carries only a single melodic line. Happily, it worked wonderfully. In fact, the resonance of those contrasting chords embracing the solitary voice created an atmosphere that was even more beautiful than I had imagined. The church seemed to breathe with every chord.
I hope this little meditation offers you a few moments of peace and stillness.
Please pay attention to the little white artefact that appears at 02:05. It flies in from the left and disappears into the organ. A few moments later, the same thing happens on the right side of the organ. We have no idea what it was. It certainly wasn’t an insect or lens flare. Then again, as every organist who spends time in old churches knows, these ancient buildings seem to have a quiet life of their own. 😊
