For me, Alain’s Litanies is one of the most beautiful works in the entire organ repertoire. If I can ever find the time, I’d love to learn it myself. But alongside his more demanding compositions, you can also find pieces, or in this case, individual variations, that are much more accessible while still having enough musical quality to stand on their own.

This is the first variation from Variations sur un thème de Clément Jannequin, JA 118. It works beautifully as an interlude, or at any other moment when quiet, intimate, yet distinctive music is wanted.
