Today I’d like to share a Dutch organ meditation: Psalm 141 – Elegisch Voorspel (Elegiac Prelude) by Klaas Jan Mulder (1930–2008).
The word elegiac refers to a mood of quiet reflection, gentle sorrow and longing. I have always admired the way Mulder lets the Genevan Psalm melody sing so naturally through rich, warm harmonies. Yes. It’s very sweet, for some too sweet, but it’s music from the heart.
Psalm 141 is a prayer of David, beginning with the words:
“Lord, I call upon You; hasten to me. Hear my voice when I cry unto You.”
It is a psalm of prayer, trust and the desire to live faithfully before God, making it a beautiful source of inspiration for this intimate prelude.
For this performance I chose the by Mulder most beloved “sound”, a registration of 8′–8′–3′–4′ with tremulants. This combination creates the warm, singing sound that has become so characteristic of Dutch psalm playing. It is a registration that lets the melody breathe naturally, almost as if it were being sung by a choir.
I performed this piece on the magnificent 1762 Bätz organ of the Lutheran Church in The Hague. Its warm principals, expressive flutes and gentle tremulant make it an ideal instrument for this style of music. It is also an organ closely associated with Klaas Jan Mulder himself through many of his recordings, which makes playing this piece on this instrument feel especially meaningful.
