On June 16, 2025, an incredibly photogenic, long-lived tornado occurred somewhat unexpectedly near Wellfleet, NE, just south of North Platte. We'll take a brief look at the meteorology behind this tornado to begin this video.
Today, the SPC has outlined a Moderate Risk (level 4/5) across much of Kansas into northern Oklahoma. A complex setup is expected to unfold, with multiple rounds of severe storms forecast between ongoing convection and additional convection to develop later. Storms should congeal into an intense complex this evening, posing a risk for significant straight-line winds approaching 100 mph. Very large hail and a few tornadoes are possible, especially with any more discrete supercells. The threat shifts east tomorrow.
***Please note that this was recorded before SPC shifted today's Moderate Risk area southeastward a bit with the 11:30am update.***
