It's Here! On Tuesday June 22nd, 2025, the very first Amtrak “Airo” train set was shipped from the Siemens Factory in Sacramento, California. Based off the Siemens Venture passenger cars, and the Siemens SC-44 Charger locomotives, the "Airo" trains are set to become the backbone of Amtrak's regional fleet. A total of 83 trainsets are to be built, with 8 of those sets going to the Amtrak Cascades service, as seen here. Painted in the new Amtrak Cascades livery, ultimately, this set will be delivered to the Cascades corridor, for service between Eugene, Oregon and Vancouver, British Columbia.
Running as train Amtrak 964, the brand new set is seen enroute to the Federal Railroad Administration's facility in Pueblo, Colorado, for further testing and certification. Two Amtrak P42DC locomotives, converted Metroliner #9800 Conference Car, a Viewliner Baggage/Dorm car, and Amtrak Heritage Sleeping Car #10020 (Pacific Bend) formed the special consist.
In this video, we'll start at the Siemens facility in Florin, California, and take an aerial tour of the facility. From there, we'll catch up to the special train on the Union Pacific Roseville Subdivision, and follow it over the Donner Pass into Nevada.
