On Wednesday Exchange Street Residence Hall had another building fire on the third floor in an apartment. Damage was contained mostly to a bedroom area. I don’t normally film these types of things but did so mostly just to send to friends and whatnot.
A university official familiar with the matter declined to comment on the cause of the fires, citing confidentiality reasons. In a statement, the official stated the following:
“In most instances when the cause of a fire alarm is not disclosed it is because someone is the cause and that individual is likely being referred to Student Conduct and it would not be appropriate for us to discuss another student’s referral to student conduct.
In both fires this week there was no malfunction of university property that caused the fire. The fire on Monday was contained to a kitchen area. The fire today was contained primarily to one bedroom. In both instances the sprinklers did not engage because the heat in the room did not meet the temperature necessary to set them off.”
Following a review of the annual campus safety report, the fires this week were the first time in several years that an actual fire occurred on campus. An incident in November 2020 that led to the response of the fire department at the North Parking Garage was caused by an elevator motor overheating and smoking, rather than an actual fire.
All fire units were cleared from the scene around 30 minutes after arrival once the fire was contained.
Responders included The University of Akron Police Department, City of Akron Police Department, and City of Akron Fire Department. The fire was in Room 341, on the third floor.
