Final Fantasy is a series that is very dear to me. In the past I have archived entries like Final Fantasy 10, 14 and 16. I know that Final Fantasy 7 is a fan favorite and have to admit that I never played the original. Currently I am in the midst of recording the original game to hopefully archive it someday, but at the same time I also wanted to visit the remake for comparison.
The remake is a great homage full of love and fan service that revolves around the first third of the original game that takes place in Midgar. We play as mercenary Cloud Strife who helps the resistance members of Avalanche in taking down Mako reactors to save the planet. But the heads of the major company Shinra have prepared a sinister plan and it is up to Cloud and his friends to stop this from happening.
The remake offers a whole bunch of new stories and content and some of it is really, really good. Especially minor characters like Biggs, Wedge and Jessie get so much more backstory and feel like properly fleshed out characters. Even though their stories are technically filler, it still put a smile on my face by how well it was written and acted. Everyone does a stellar performance and it was amazing to see the cast come alive like this.
The combat feels smooth too with spectacular combos and plenty of gameplay types you can create with the Materia system. Where the game does falter sometimes is in its pacing and the amount of repetitive or uninteresting side quests you get shoved into your face. They are your very standard kind like "find three cats" or "find several locked doors and open them for some items" etc. The side quests are not as dull as in Final Fantasy 15, but I was hoping for a bit more.
Other than that the game is fantastic and a great experience for both newcomers and veterans of the Final Fantasy 7 universe.
