This guy will usually open with Funny Breath, which now causes Poison damage on top of inflicting the status. Due to it's power and Red XIII starting in the front row, he'll be instantly wiped unless counter-measures are taken. Which they weren't.
A Star Pendant grants immunity to the Poison status which means Funny Breath will miss because the status can't be inflicted (Barret has the Star Pendant). We can also reduce the damage of Funny Breath by equipping Elemental+Poison to a character's armour which is what Cloud has.
Now down to brass tacks. Sample with revive his underlings whenever one is killed, but he can only do this 9 times before he runs out of MP for both this and his Shady Breath attack, leaving him with just his regular physical attack.
To greatly speed this up, we can employ Ghost Hands to quickly drain out his 360MP before throwing a item like a Plume or Antarctic to wipe the OPTs accompanying HO512. Then comes the slobberknocker of exchanging hits, using Grenades and healing as HP gets low. We also maintain Barrier to keep the damage manageable. Needless to say, this is all about keeping your composure and reacting to changing circumstances.
Or you can just Cross Slash him then throw some stuff. Whatever works.
