Located at old Fire Company No. 7 on Shuler Ave. Butler County tests their sirens on the 1st Wednesday of every month at noon, weather-permitting.
Went to this Thunderbolt in Hamilton on the 1st Wednesday with Dominic, Aiden, Connor, Benicio and many others including several younger enthusiasts. This Thunderbolt was extremely loud, probably the loudest I've ever heard. The echoes off the surrounding buildings were insane as well. In that alleyway, Connor's decibel meter recorded 120.8 (and that was not on axis either). The echoes on wind down were insane to experience in person.
Hamilton installed their Thunderbolts following the F5 tornadoes in Xenia and Sayler Park on April 3, 1974. This Thunderbolt was one of six original units installed in Hamilton by Cartwright Communications, Cincinnati in March 1975 at a cost of approximately $40,000 (which is equivalent to around $202,000 in 2021).
Today, five of the original six Thunderbolts in the City of Hamilton remain along with the city's original civil defense siren (the HOR Super Sirex, which was installed in 1954). The 6th Thunderbolt is located on the ground at the public works yard, and was removed several years ago prior to the demolition of Lincoln School, which it was mounted on top of. That unit is being utilized for spare parts for the other Thunderbolts. The rest of the sirens in Hamilton are comprised of 2001s of various ages and a few 508s.
This station at which this siren is located was originally built in 1910. It is no longer an active fire station and I’m assuming that the only likely thing preventing this historical building’s demolition is the siren on top of it. The City of Hamilton does not actively maintain their sirens aside from minor repairs.
