Amtrak trains kick up snow on the Keystone Corridor as they speed between Philadelphia and Harrisburg! In this short video, we caugtht six trains between 11:45am and 4:15pm, including the two diesel-powered Pennsylvanians, running at speeds between 80-110 MPH in the Mt. Joy area of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. While not the fastest trains in the United States, the Keystone Corridor offers speeds of up to 125 MPH in certain straight areas. This line is a unique portion of former Pennsylvania Railroad electrified territory that still survives today, being the longest electrified route to break away from the famed "Northeast Corridor" between Washington DC and Boston.
It was a cold Saturday afternoon with temperatures in the 20's, but a hot sun was thawing away at the recent 6" snowfall.
0:00 - Train 666 with ACS-64 662 leans into the curve where Eby Chiques Road once crossed the tracks. The refresh rate of the dim LED lights is often caught by the camera, giving a "flickering" effect not otherwise seen by human eyes.
0:30 - Train 663 slows coming into the former Newcomer Road crossing, but still kicks up a cloud of white. The cabcar blows its horn to alert crews working on building the new Mt Joy station; ACS-64 606 pushes. The station is not very accessible right now, but I hope to do an update video on that station soon. A former Rock Island hopper sits in the mill siding here, I used a text overlay to "restore" its look.
1:05 - Now on the other side of Mt Joy, "Pennsylvanian" 42 with P42DC 87 blows its K5LA for the workzone, absolutely zooming by our camera. The signals in the background are the approach to RHEEMS.
1:45 - 43 speeds past Newcomer Road with P42DC 121. The whistle signs covered up for the day.
2:15 - ACS-64 606 leads train 670 back east through Salunga after laying over at Harrisburg station for a couple hours.
2:30 - Train 665 being pushed by ACS-64 614 leans through the curve at Eby Chiques. It's only 4:11pm, but would be the last daylight train of the day as another train would not be due through for another hour and a half.

In the heart of Pennsylvania anthracite country exists a regional railroad whose miles are made of famous fallen flags, including the Reading Company; Lehigh Valley; and Central Railroad of New Jersey, stretching from Reading, over the Blue Mountains, and northward above the Poconos. A popular commodity on the aptly-named Reading, Blue Mountain & Northern Railroad continues to be anthracite coal, which is shipped far and wide across the country and abroad. But there is another popular coal burning attraction in this area: Reading & Northern #425, a 4-6-2 Pacific steam locomotive. The former GM&N Baldwin built in 1928 is the main show every October during the Fall Foliage trips. Although a warm and unusually wet season left the autumn colors abysmal at best, the sounds come alive in the hills and across the valleys between Reading and Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania as the gutsy Pacific puts on a show.
