May 29, 2014: Starting in Cumberland, MD on a dreary morning, we follow empty oil train K055 out of the Queen City and into the Allegheny Mountains of Pennsylvania, hitting some of the most famous and scenic locations along the way.
Power for the train is:
BNSF SD70MAC 9595 and BNSF Dash-9-44CW 4793.
BNSF 9595 is in the Burlington Northern executive paint scheme, developed by Gerald Grinstein.
0:00 - The train has just departed Cumberland, MD, heading west through Viaduct Junction. There are no horns blown here, Cumberland is a quiet zone.
1:40 - Well on it's way into the mountains, K055 grinds its way past the scenic overlook at Fairhope.
4:30 - Almost at the summit, K055 rounds "that other" famous Horseshoe Curve at Mance.
5:35 - Heading downhill, K055 passes under another iconic landmark along the Keystone Subdivision: the Western Maryland's Keystone viaduct, whose rails have long been abandoned, but now hosts the Great Allegheny Passage rail trail, which is a world famous route for bicycles.
