On Saturday September 13, 2013, Reading and Northern ran a special excursion from Port Clinton to Jim Thorpe and back pulled by none other than 425. It was an extremely wet and rainy day, but that did not stop 425 and crew from putting on a spectacular show as usual. Very few people were out chasing—the least I've seen in years.
We start out at the Reading, Blue Mountain and Northern headquarters at Port Clinton, working our way up the grade to Hometown, then capture 425 pulling into the station at Jim Thorpe. On the southbound run, 425 fights its way over the grade to Hometown, with the sun finally making an appearance in the last run-by at Molino. Oddly enough, I was the only one at that location, which is normally stuffed with dozens of railfans.

In the heart of Pennsylvania anthracite country exists a regional railroad whose miles are made of famous fallen flags, including the Reading Company; Lehigh Valley; and Central Railroad of New Jersey, stretching from Reading, over the Blue Mountains, and northward above the Poconos. A popular commodity on the aptly-named Reading, Blue Mountain & Northern Railroad continues to be anthracite coal, which is shipped far and wide across the country and abroad. But there is another popular coal burning attraction in this area: Reading & Northern #425, a 4-6-2 Pacific steam locomotive. The former GM&N Baldwin built in 1928 is the main show every October during the Fall Foliage trips. Although a warm and unusually wet season left the autumn colors abysmal at best, the sounds come alive in the hills and across the valleys between Reading and Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania as the gutsy Pacific puts on a show.
