Make sure you’re following and subscribed so you don’t miss more details we’re sharing on this fascinating study on melasma, aka hyperpigmentation, aka liver spots.
This is 1 of 3 studies we found performed in China on the effectiveness of facial Gua Sha for melasma. Things to note about this study:
*It defined “effective” as more than 30% clearing of melasma according to pre-defined criteria.
*I wish they added another treatment group that used only the mask, but I still find this study influential in how I treat melasma.
*A control group was included that took Vitamin C supplementation only.
*Details were left out on how often this facial Gua Sha protocol was applied to patients. But we know the Gua Sha portion is about 20min, and the herbal mask was applied for 30min. Based on other clues, we are *guess-timating* this was done 1x week for 8 weeks.
Our conclusion: facial Gua Sha combined with topical treatments and skincare is a promising option that may help minimize or reduce melasma, especially as an at-home care option.
In TCM melasma is caused by Liver organ imbalance and poor Qi and Blood flow. Facial Gua Sha helps improve blood flow and opens the energy channels of the face where melasma often occurs.
Stay tuned for more details and let us know if you want the tutorial on this protocol!
