Want better hair? Create a better scalp environment. See Abigail’s before and after scalp+hair routine in the post before this one. She used to follow all the rules for curly hair care, but it just didn’t get her anywhere. Then, she started to incorporate

1) TCM scalp Gua Sha + Massage
2) Head spa wisdom (from @ritsukoborges) like cleanse the scalp more often, fluff your shampoo
3) Styling advice from @acacia_breeze

And everything changed
It’s also important to apply good “lifestyle support” with deep, quality sleep + right nutrition (make sure you’re getting enough protein and fats as much as you are fiber from eating the rainbow). These steps also help improve hair growth rate, hair texture and quality (curl pattern, thickness and strength of strands), and hair density.
Abigail’s hair is fine, thin and curly. She also uses a lot of styling products so she washes more frequently to keep her scalp and follicles clear. Heavy hair masks and oils also weigh her hair down and disrupt her curls so she leans into lightweight products with lighter oils.

Keep in mind, what your hair needs may be similar or different than Abigail. We wanted to highlight here how popular advice like “no-poo” or “1x every 2 week washing” doesn’t work for everyone. Abigail’s hair and scalp do far better when she washes 3x week.

How do you know what your scalp needs? Tap the experts + 3rd party professionals (TCM practitioners, Derms, Trichologists, Hair Stylists specialized in your hair type). Or, experiment at home and see what feels and looks better for you.

Unlike most of the wisdom out there for curly hair, Abigail also finds that drying her hair is better than air-drying, which used to make her hair tangle more and break (not to mention sleeping or going out with wet hair in Winter is a big TCM NO-NO). She uses protectant and a diffuser which reduces the chances of heat damage.
