As a TCM practitioner, I’m used to Chinese medicine practices getting ‘mistranslated’ when they arrive in the West. I get it—we try to understand something foreign through a lens already familiar, like defining Gua Sha as a lymphatic drainage technique.

To me, that’s like calling yoga a form of ballet where you have to point your toes or you’re doing it wrong. Skipping lymphatic prep (which I never do) isn’t a mistake, and using drainage strokes doesn't matter. I rarely do either, and my results? Still beyond."

Western beauty and skincare seems hyper-fixated on lymphatic drainage. But in Chinese medicine—and true Gua Sha practice—the focus is broader. Gua Sha isn’t so much drainage technique as a friction technique aimed at
🩸 Boosting blood flow (face or body)
🌀 Releasing fascia adhesions*
💆 Relieving muscle tension
⚡️ Stimulating energy channels (经络)
♻️ Promoting toxin release
💧 And yes, improving fluid circulation
So why the 'lymphatic drainage' mix-up? From what I understand, lymphatic drainage is best using a feather-light touch, no oil, and fingers—not exactly how Gua Sha works. Face Gua Sha, for example, uses oil and varying pressure (light to firm) to engage fascia, muscles, and circulation.

The most traditional Gua Sha produces sha—that signature red petechiae—while facial Gua Sha is a gentler adaptation that originates from those same roots.

Bottom line? If you want to combine lymphatic drainage and Gua Sha, go for it! But they’re not the same thing—and you don’t have to merge them to do Gua Sha correctly. Hope that clears things up!
