Hi everybody, Andy here with etrailer. Let's take a quick look at this custom fit lift gate gas strut. Now this has been designed to fit your 1999 to 2006 Volkswagen Golf, then your 2006 to 2009 GTI, then your 2001 to 2004 Jetta wagon. And then finally your 1998 to 2005 Passat wagon. On custom fit parts such as this gas strut, I do recommend taking advantage of our vehicle fit guide here at etrailer. Just pop in the year, make, and model of your vehicle and our fit guide will confirm if this will work for you or if we have something comparable that will work for you.
So this gas strut is basically what's going to help your vehicle's lift gate like the back hatch on your vehicle open and close smoothly. So if your current one is worn out or it's not holding up the door anymore, this is going to replace it directly. As you know, when you open the lift gate, this strut is going to extend to support the weight. So it's going to lift easily and stay in place without you having to hold it. And then when you close it, it's going to compress in a controlled way so the door comes down slowly instead of slamming shut.
Now what's nice about this one is that it is designed for smooth operation in all temperatures. Inside it has a dampening system that's going to prevent that jerky or bouncy motion that you sometimes get with cheaper or worn out struts. And it also has an internal wiper that's going to keep the rod lubricated, which is going to help reduce friction and prevent sticking over time. Insulation's going to be really straightforward as well. You don't need any special tools.
This is just going to snap onto your vehicle's existing ball stud. So this is going to be a ball socket installation. It's built to last with a rust-resistant steel tube and a coated rod, so it's going to hold up well against the elements. One important thing to know if your vehicle uses two struts, you should replace both at the same time. If you only replace one, it could put uneven stress on the lift gate and potentially cause damage, especially to like your hinges, things like that.
