On 2 March 1960, Elvis Presley spoke to reporters as he returned to the United States after completing two years of military service with the US Army in Germany. Already a global recording star and established film box‑office draw, Presley was preparing to resume his civilian career after a prolonged absence from the spotlight. In this interview, he was asked about his ambitions as a dramatic actor and whether he hoped to model himself on figures such as Frank Sinatra or James Dean. Presley rejected imitation, explaining that he didn't want to "fashion myself after any one individual", and would instead try to “develop my own technique”.
