On 10 May 1956, John Hartley interviewed members of the public about their local elections. 1956 saw a new approach to British politics. The night before, Labour MP Kenneth Younger went on radio to do a parody of ‘Oh dear, what can the matter be?’ as a singing party-political broadcast. The UK Prime Minister at the time was Tory Sir Anthony Eden, Hartley captured the mix of public support for the Conservative Party, the Labour Party but also a glimpse of British people’s political apathy. Disillusioned by the struggles of post-war Britain, many people may have felt like they didn’t have the capacity to be involved in politics. Some argue that the Conservatives had the country’s best interests at heart, while one woman stresses the need for socialism in Britain to help fight poverty.
