As the Congo Crisis unfolded in 1963, ITN spoke to British volunteers about the idea of a “world police force”. Their responses capture a distinctive moment in post-war thinking: a generation that remembered the devastation of global conflict and placed its faith in the United Nations and other international institutions to uphold peace and order in a changing, decolonising world. The United Nations Civilian Police (UNPOL) would be formally established the following year in 1964.
