In November 1982, during the early years of the Iran‑Iraq War, Iraqi forces struck Kharg Island, a central pillar of Iran’s oil industry. The attacks formed part of a wider effort to disrupt Gulf shipping and choke Iran’s economy, as both sides targeted tankers and export terminals in a conflict that alarmed global energy markets. Kharg’s importance then – handling the vast majority of Iran’s oil exports – made it a prime target for Saddam Hussein’s forces. More than four decades later, and one month into the current conflict between Iran and the United States and Israel, Kharg has again entered strategic debate, with US President Donald Trump publicly threatening to deploy ground troops to seize the island to pressure Tehran into negotiations.
