On 12 January 1961, ITN's Elizabeth Kenrick visited Mr Samuel Bretson's school for butlers in Wimbledon. Kenrick spoke to an unnamed student, who told her that he hoped to become a butler to a wealthy American film magnate, noting that Americans prefer English butlers and praising the role as a well‑paid, pleasant occupation. Bretson – one of Britain’s best‑known butlers and head of his own London-based High School for Butlers – explained some of the skills taught at the school, including how to correctly carve a chicken, how to "talk to gentlemen", and how to stand on the pads of their feed "so they don't get flat-footed".
