In February 1986, the 20‑year rule of Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos collapsed after weeks of political crisis and mass protest, bringing an abrupt end to one of Southeast Asia’s longest‑standing dictatorships. Ruling since 1965, Ferdinand Marcos and his wife Imelda maintained power through martial law, cronyism and violent repression, amassing vast personal wealth while enjoying American support as a strategic Cold War ally. The February 1986 presidential election pitted Marcos against Corazon Aquino, the widow of the slain opposition leader, whose candidacy transformed popular grief into a mass political movement. When Marcos declared victory amid widespread allegations of electoral fraud and voter intimidation, huge demonstrations erupted across the Philippines. The army rebelled and Washington turned.
