The Ibn Tulun Mosque in Cairo is Egypt's oldest (877 A.D.) surviving mosque and is one of Egypt's largest mosques as well. It was very quiet and peaceful when I visited the mosque with my guide Ahmed, who is an Egyptologist. Ahmed and I visited 13 mosques in Cairo, and this was one of my favorites due to the history of this mosque. If you recognize the mosque, it might be because the James Bond film, The Spy Who Loved Me, was filmed here. The highlight for me was climbing to the top of the minaret to get a great view of the mosque and of the city of Cairo, so please watch through to the end to see these great views.
