After a three hour car ride through the Sahara Desert, my guide Nour and I arrived at Abu Simbel, one of the most recognized temples in the world. This place is truly amazing and it was definitely one of the highlights of my 2 1/2 week tour of Egypt.The temple complex was built over 3,000 years ago and all four giant statues are of King Ramesses II. The temple was buried in the sand for centuries. We will go inside both the temple dedicated to King Ramesses II, and the temple dedicated to his wife, Queen Nefertari. What makes this temple complex even more amazing, is that both entire temple complexes were moved here block by block from their original location 200 meters away! Nour, who is an Egyptologist, tell us about the history of Abu Simbel, why it was built, how it was built, and how they moved the temples here. He also tells us the meaning of the different hieroglyphics, which all tell a story of ancient Egypt.
