Cyber Police ESWAT landed on Game Forest GF today and this is genuinely one of Sega's stranger run and gun games from the late 80s. Developed and published by Sega in September 1989 on the System 16-B arcade board, you play Duke Oda, a rookie officer in the Liberty City Cyber Police Force trying to clean up the streets and eventually take down a terrorist organization planning world domination.
Duke starts out with nothing but a single shot pistol, and the gameplay leans heavily on the same jump between planes mechanic Sega had already used in Shinobi two years earlier. Arrest the first three wanted criminals and he gets promoted into ESWAT, short for Enhanced Special Weapons and Tactics, which comes with a proper Power Suit equipped with a mounted machine gun, twin turbo booster thrusters and extra protection for the remaining stages. The actual in game feature showcase for that suit gets genuinely silly too, since alongside all the serious military gear it also lists a karaoke mic and even a built in fried chicken and lunch guide as part of the equipment.
There are 15 stages total, spanning city streets, car yards, stadiums, restaurants, construction sites and boat docks, with a different wanted criminal waiting at the end of each one. Some of those bosses are exactly what you would expect from a cop story, but others go in a completely different direction, throwing a tiger or a giant ape at you with zero explanation. Sega brought it home the following year as ESWAT: City Under Siege on Genesis and Master System, keeping the core story and characters while changing up the levels and weapons along the way.
